Here's the part that most women are never told.
The gut hormones responsible for silencing food noise — GLP-1 in particular — are exquisitely sensitive to estrogen. During the perimenopause and menopause transition, as estrogen levels drop, the gut's ability to produce these hormones declines sharply.

Calorie restriction increases cortisol. Cortisol acidifies the gut. An acidic gut suppresses GLP-1. A suppressed GLP-1 signal means the brain never receives the "stop eating, you're satisfied" message — so food noise intensifies, cravings spike, and willpower becomes irrelevant because you're fighting a physiological signal, not a psychological one.
"The restriction-craving loop that we see in so many women over 40 is entirely consistent with this model," the research notes. "Cutting calories is not a treatment for food noise — in this population, it's frequently a trigger."
The research points to a fundamentally different approach: rather than fighting hunger by restricting food, address the gut environment that's generating the hunger signal in the first place.
Specifically, the data suggests that supporting the gut's ability to maintain optimal pH — and therefore restore GLP-1 production — can quiet food noise at its source, without willpower, starvation, or restriction.
